Country Braided Rugs

Old World Charm For A Modern World

Country braided rugs got started in the early days of America's pioneering past when living conditions were harsh and very little
could be wasted. These early settlers found ways to construct practical floor coverings that were both durable and warm by reusing virtually any discarded fabric. That kind of hardscrabble resourcefulness was characteristic of communities af the time and a source of great pride even today.

The tradition of the country braided rug continued to be handed down from mother to daughter over the years with little attention from the outside world. But things started to change with the rise of the Arts & Crafts movement starting in the late 1800's. From 1890 to 1910 the country braided rug reached the height of its popularity as its timeless design and skilled craftsmanship fit perfectly with the aesthetic of the movement.

With the excesses and opulence of 1920's in full swing the lowly braided rug was pushed to the sidelines as everyone was getting rich and more sophisticated furnishings were in vogue. It was not until the depression of the 1930's that the practical and frugal characteristics of the country braided rug reestablished it as a classic decorating staple.

A pivotal change that allowed the braided rug to move into the main stream came in the early 20th century when a way was found to manufacturer braided rugs by machine. With economies of scale and mass production braided rugs became a common site in many middle class American homes.

Unfortunately this technological innovation also meant there were very few left with the skills and time to hand craft a braided rug from scratch. The art form declined and became the domain of small groups of artisans and enthusiasts.

Today, the vast majority of braided rugs are machine made by a small group of American manufacturers that have managed to remain in business despite the onslaught of cheap imports from all over the world.

Just like the 1930's, harsh economic times are with us once again and just as before many are re-discovering the durability and value that the country braided rug has always provided. It has stood the test of time for over 200 years and no doubt will be with us for another 200.
